ERASMUS PROGRAMME
HEALTH
CARE AND INSURANCE
According
to current Bulgarian legislation concerning health service, foreign citizens on
a short-term stay in the country (up to 3 months or one semester) are to pay
for the medical services provided to them in full, unless the country they come
from is a party to a special international agreement, stating otherwise, to
which the Republic of Bulgaria is also a party (Art. 39, Par. 4, the Law for
Health Insurance).
Visiting
students who are to take a full academic year at the University are advised to
get medical insurance in their home country. Should the need arise, it will cover medical treatment and stay in a
hospital here.
There
are many consulting services, specialised offices, as well as dentists’ offices
in the town, two private clinics, a state polyclinic and a hospital. A medical
examination at a private clinic costs about 30 leva ($ 15.00), a home visit by a
physician will double that cost.
