EVENTS
* Burgas Free University was awarded the highest grade by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency, for the high quality of the education process, the achievements of lecturers and students in research and for the active and fruitful international contacts of the university.
6 years is the maximum term of accreditation, regulated by the Law for Higher Education, and Burgas Free University was given 6-years accreditation.
* Buegas Free University is among the first universities in Bulgaria certified under ISO 9001:2000. This is an international quality certificate valid in the whole world certifying that the activities of the university correspond to the regulated and controlled standards. All the activities and areas are certified: education of students for the acquiring of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree; research activity; international cooperation in the area of higher education; qualification activity. The term of the ISO certificate is 3 years.
* The NATO Secretary General Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer sent a letter of acknowledgement to the Rector of BFU Prof. Dr. Petko Chobanov
* The Minister of State Administration and Administrative Reform Mr. Nikolay Vasilev visited Burgas Free University on 23 June 2008, for the opening of the information days about the Opeartion Programme of the European Union, organized by the Ministry of State Administration and Administrative Reform. During a meeting with the Rector Prof. Chobanov and the Vice-Rector Prof. Yankov the results of the specialized courses held at BFU by BFU lecturers for training the officers of the state administration in the South-East part of Bulgaria were discussed.
* BFU organized the International Research Conference “The Knowledge Economy – Opportunities and Challenges to Higher Education” on 13-15 June 2008. The topic areas of the conference were:
Economics, Finance and Investments
Marketing and Management
Training in Business Studies in the context of the Knowledge Economy
Public Communications (Journalism and Public Relations) and Philology
Social Work and Pedagogy
Law as an instrument for creating beneficial institutional environment
Engineering and Technologies

The Rector Prof. Chobanov welcomed the conference participants and said that the main reason for choosing the conference title was the fact that after the accession of Bulgaria to the EU Bulgarian economy is already part of the world economy.
A welcoming address was sent by the Mayor of the City of Burgas Mr. Dimitar Nikolov, who is also a Member of the Board of Trustees of BFU.
More than 200 lecturers from all universities in the country took part in the event, as well representatives of the partner universities abroad with which BFU has framework Cooperation Agreements: The Finance Academy under the Government of the Russian Federation in Moscow; The University of Tbilisi, Georgia; Trakya University in Edirne, Turkey; Halic University in Istanbul, Turkey; Bulgarian-German Association for Cooperation; Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey and Kadir Has University in Istanbul, Turkey.
* On 26-28 May 2008 official delegation from BFU visited Halic University in Istanbul, Turkey. The two universities signed a cooperation agreement on 4.12.2007 for student and teaching staff exchange, joint research and practical projects, mutual publications, etc. during the visit details of the signed bilateral agreement under the Erasmus programme were discussed.
* Jaap de Hoop Scheffer was awarded the honorary degree Doctor Honoris Causa of Burgas Free University for his outstanding contribution to freedom, peace, democracy and his constructive cooperation with Bulgaria within NATO and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe in the name of security and stability in the broad Euro-Atlantic Region. The ceremony was part of the official graduation ceremony held at the University on 23 May 2008, at which over 300 graduates received their diplomas for higher education.
* The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium Mr. Philip Beke visited Burgas Free University on 8 May 2008 and discussed the international contacts and agreements of BFU with other educational institutions in Europe.
* For the first time Burgas Free University was the host of the Spring Charity Ball, organized by Mr, Dimitar Sabkov – Manager of “Dars-Auto” Ltd and member of the Board of Trustees of BFU. The event was organized under the patronage of the Mayor of the City of Burgas Mr. Dimitar Nikolov. Special guest was the Ambassador of Austria Klaus Fabian.
* On 14.12.2007 the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea visited Burgas Free University, accompanied by his wife, officers and diplomats of the Embassy, as well as by the Representative of Hyundai Motor Company for Bulgaria Mr. Kalin Damyanov. The official delegation has a meeting with the Rector, members of the Academic Council and the Student Council, and discussed the international contacts and agreements of BFU with other educational institutions in Europe and the world.
* On 4.12.2007 an official delegation from Halic University in Istanbul, Turkey visited Burgas Free University. A framework Cooperation Agreement was signed between the two institutions, for student and teaching staff exchange, joint research and practical projects, mutual publications, etc. The two universities also signed bilateral agreement under the Erasmus programme.
* The Ambassador of the USA in Bulgaria Mr. John Bayerly visited Burgas Free Univeristy on 16.11.2007. After the meeting with the Rector Prof. Chobanov the Ambassador saw the exhibition “100 years diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and the USA”, exposed in the university.
* The Rector of Burgas Free University Prof. Chobanov is a member of the official parliamentary delegation visiting China from 15.09.2007 till 23.09.2007. The delegation is led by the Chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee at the Parliament Mr. Solomon Passy, who is also a member of the Board of Trustees of BFU. The visit includes meetings with the Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Parliament, the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs with Europe, and the parliamentary group for friendship with Bulgaria.
* Mr. Abdullah Gul, the new President of the Republic of Turkey, is Doctor Honoris Causa of Burgas Free University. The honorary degree was awarded to Mr. Gul by the Academic Council of BFU on an official ceremony on 12 May 2003. In his academic speech Mr. Gul said: “I will never forget this day!” In the Honorary Book he wrote: “It is a great honour for me as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey to visit Burgas Free University. This visit will contribute to the development of the cooperation between the universities in both countries”.
* Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lina Anastassova, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies, took part in an International Conference on Tourism in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 30.07.2007 till 02.08.2007, as one of the 4 main lecturers. Her lecture topic was: “Marketing Problems of Cultural Tourism in Less-Developed Countries”
* On 5-6 July 2007 the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at BFU organized a Research Conference “Modern Technologies ‘07”. Representatives of more than 11 universities in the country and abroad took part in the event. 35 papers in 3 topic areas were presented: Engineering and Technologies, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, and Education Technologies.
* The Rector of Burgas Free University and the Vice-Rectors Assoc. Prof. Dr. Galya Hristozova and Prof. Dr. Vasil Yankov visited the Belarus State Economic University in Minsk. The academic and research cooperation between the two universities is carried out on the basis of the Cooperation Agreement signed in 2002. The Agreement was resigned for a new period of 5 years, and included new ways of collaboration in the area of research and education. Student placements and exchange of students and teachers are envisaged.
* Jeffrey Van Orden was awarded the honorary degree Doctor Honoris Causa of Burgas Free University for his outstanding contribution to the process of accession of Bulgaria to the European Union. The ceremony was part of the official graduation ceremony held at the University on 23 May 2007, at which over 300 graduates received their diplomas for higher education.
* The first Bulgarian European Commissioner Meglena Kuneva visited Burgas Free Univerity and held a lecture on: “The Future of the European Union”. A discussion was made with the students and lecturers of BFU about the place of young people in Europe, the need for professionals and the challenges in front of the globalizing world.. The Chairman of the Foreign Policy Commission at the Parliament Dr. Solomon Passy also took part in the discussion. Meglena Kuneva was awarded the sign of BFU and wrote a message in the Honorary Book.
* On 3 May 2007 Prof. Dr. Gundolff Bayer, manager of the Marketing Department at the University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau, Germany visited Burgas Free University and held a lecture on: “Trade Mark Policy of the Company”. The visit is part of the teaching staff mobility programme, agreed between the two universities under the Erasmus programme. After the lecture a meeting with the Vice-Rector Prof. Yankov and the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lina Anastassova was held, at which opportunities for joint research and exchange of publications were discussed.
* The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany H.E. Mr. Michael Geier visited Burgas Free University, met the students and discussed the themes of the Germany’s chairmanship of the EU, the German-Bulgarian cultural relations and the economic relations with Bulgaria. The meeting that was held in German was welcomed by the students in Law and Public Administration, as well as by the graduates of the German Language School in Burgas, who were awarded their DSD language diplomas by H.E. Mr. Michael Geier.
H.E. Mr. Michael Geier visited BFU for the second time, and is part of the programme dedicated to the Day of Europe in Burgas, organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Germany, the Polish Cultural Institute and the French Cultural Centre.
H.E. Mr. Michael Geier and the Rector of BFU Prof. Dr. Chobanov opened the exhibition “Europe visits Burgas”.
* The Minister for European Affairs of Bulgaria Ms. Gergana Grancharova visited BFU, met with students and lecturers and held a lecture on: “Time for Leaders”. She said: “Your university is an university for leaders”. There was a meeting between Gergana Granchrova and the Rector of BFU Prof. Chobanov, and the Chairman of the Foreign Policy Commission at the Parliament Dr. Solomon Passy, at which the opportunities for successful professional realization for the students in the EU were discussed, as well the opportunities for expanding the international contacts of BFU. Minister Grancharova signed the Honorary Book.
* During the period 5-23 March 2007 Prof. Tom Silbiger was a guest lecturer at Burgas Free University, under a programme of the Centre for Legal Research in Salzburg, Austria. Prof. Silbiger is a lawyer practitioner in New York, with 25 years of experience in the area of corporate and trade law. He held a series of lectures and practical training of students in Law, third grade. He talked also about the American legal system, some aspects of business, trade law and anti-trust legislation. 50 students took part in the programme that was carried out in English. Prof. Silbiger awarded the most distinguished of them with certificates for course attendance. He also had several meetings with the faculty management, lecturers from the Faculty of Legal Studies, and the Vice-Rector of Research and International Cooperation Assoc. Prof. Dr. Galya Hristozova.
* On 16-17 February 2007 the Faculty of Business Studies at BFU organized the International Research Conference “Modern Management Practices V”. Representatives of more than 15 universities in the country and abroad took part in the conference with papers. Among them are lecturers from The Finance Academy under the Government of the Russian Federation in Moscow, Kiev National University of Trade and Economics, Ukraine, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Energy in Bulgaria.
