In the BFU it was read on navarshvashit today 150 years from April's rise
On the occasion of today's 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the April Uprising, which falls on May 2, the Burgas Free University hosted a discussion studio on the topic "The April Uprising of 1876 - the apotheosis of the Bulgarian bourgeois revolution". The event was held on April 20 - the date of the outbreak of the uprising in the old style, and with its content, it became the only one so far in which the topic was discussed outside the cabinet, entirely with a media recording from the Bulgarian National Radio and with the participation of young people and experts from various fields.
The topic of the economic processes that led to the uprising as a culmination of the desires and problems of the young Bulgarian bourgeoisie within the then Ottoman Empire, brought together as discussants a historian - the director of the Regional Historical Museum Sliven (center of the 2nd revolutionary district during the uprising) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nikolay Sirakov, economists - the rector of BSU Prof. Dr. Milen Baltov and the deputy mayor of Burgas Municipality Mr. Stanimir Apostolov and a lawyer - the chairman of the Burgas Municipal Council Mr. Mihail Hadzhiyanev. The event was open to participants with an interest in the topic - with the assistance of the Regional Department of Education, prominent students, as well as students, teachers from BSU, from the University "Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov", from high schools in Burgas and from the largest rural school in Bulgaria - the 170-year-old "Paisiy Hilendarski" Primary School - village of Topolchane, Sliven.
Hall 110 of BSU has become a real studio for a format similar to istoriya.bg and with its beginning broadcast on the air of the Bulgarian National Radio. BNR responded to the invitation and, in addition to this event, as part of the Social Laboratory for Media and Digitalization jointly generated in November 2025 with BSU, will be a media partner for the entire university calendar dedicated to the 35th anniversary of its establishment in 1991. The entire discussion studio, which lasted 90 minutes, was audiovisually recorded for subsequent broadcasts in various programs by BNR Burgas.
The Bulgarian ethnicity with its entrepreneurial qualities and endless hard work, determination and curiosity within the vast territory (currently over 20 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa) of the Ottoman Empire, led to the first capitalist-type factory not only in the Balkans, but also in the entire empire – registered by Dobri Zhelyazkov in the city of Sliven 190 years ago. The Crimean War led to a reduction in customs duties on goods from the highly industrialized British and French empires and worsened the competitive position of the young Bulgarian bourgeoisie. The totally inadequate tax system in the empire for capitalist relations and the lack of guarantees for property and life led to arbitrariness in the empire. The regulatory framework and nature of the independence of the territories of other peoples in the European part of the empire in the 19th century. The importation of agricultural goods, initially from the USA and subsequently from Argentina, through ports in the Bulgarian territory, which began in 1868. Last but not least, the financial bankruptcy and suspension of servicing the foreign obligations of the Ottoman Empire in 1875. These were only some of the markers in the discussions that pointed to the bourgeois nature of the national revolution conceived in 1975 (with limited experience during the Stara Zagora Uprising) and that broke out in the spring of 1876, which reached a victorious end with the San Stefano Peace Agreement on March 3, 1878 and was made normatively official with the texts of the Berlin Congress months later.
The studio format of discussants and awake young people in the audience from hall 110 of the Bulgarian State University came to the conclusion that May 2 is an extremely appropriate date on which to pay tribute to the feat of the Aprilists, and at the same time to the Bulgarian entrepreneurs, the free-thinking people and the birth of the Bulgarian army spirit, as a Day of the Bulgarian bourgeois revolution and national bravery.
